Why We All Love the Targaryens
It has been more than a decade since names like White Walkers, dragons, and a myriad of fictional locations entered our pop culture lexicon. While dragons have existed in fiction since the days of Tolkien—and in folklore across the world long before that—no show or book series has woven them so closely into our collective imagination as George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.
For the average fan or novice reader, it may appear as if Martin sprang to popularity overnight through his Game of Thrones books. The truth is far from that. Martin was already a highly accomplished writer back in the early 1980s through other works like Fevre Dream and Dying of the Light.
What sets Martin and his works apart from other fantasy authors is not just his mature and explicitly dark tone. He broke the sacred laws of fiction, where bad things rarely fall upon the hero and the good guys inevitably win. In classic stories like Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings or children’s staples like Harry Potter, the protagonists always triumph. The Hobbits defeat the Dark Lord Sauron through the power of friendship, and Harry sails past death traps and curses thanks to plot armor.
Martin is a notable oddity among sci-fi and fantasy titans. Unlike creators such as Frank Herbert (Dune) or Tolkien, who mostly built linear main epics, Martin creates extensive spin-offs even before finishing his primary works.
Borrowing his own words, there are two types of creators: the Architects and the Gardeners. The Architects plan everything beforehand, outlining character arcs and plot points before writing the first chapter. Martin falls into the second category—the Gardeners—who plant an idea, water it, and watch how it grows.
This is why we see him meandering through side projects like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (The Tales of Dunk and Egg) or Fire & Blood (the source material for House of the Dragon) rather than rushing to finish the last two books in the Game of Thrones series.
The Chosen One’s Burden
As a community, we are drawn to characters who operate in moral gray areas. Whether it is Paul Atreides, the erstwhile son of the Duke of Arrakis, or Anakin Skywalker, the prophesied Chosen One from Star Wars, these messianic figures ultimately ended up killing billions.
Paul Atreides, in a way, popularized the trope of the “good guy who does bad things.” Yet, despite their destructive actions, the people surrounding these figures still follow them, drawn by the undeniable allure of power. These characters are fundamentally different from those around them; they may look like regular humans, but they are blessed with skills and gifts that elevate them closer to gods. Paul could control the sandworms of Arrakis—behemoths larger than the greatest mythical dragons—while Anakin, had he reached his full potential, possessed enough power to revive or destroy entire planets.
And then we have the Targaryens. They stand apart from this list because the early Targaryens, who came to Westeros before the Doom of Valyria, looked visibly alien to the natives. With their pale skin, lilac eyes, and platinum-white hair, the Targaryens resembled nothing Westeros had ever seen. But what made them truly distinct were their dragons.
Riding creatures that could topple castles and melt steel, the Targaryens were originally a lesser noble house in Old Valyria. However, after their ancestor Daenys the Dreamer foresaw the Doom, the family relocated to their island stronghold of Dragonstone just in time to survive the destruction of the Valyrian peninsula. Years later, it was from here that Aegon the Conqueror—the First of His Name—along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, launched their conquest of the Seven Kingdoms with their dragons.
Unlike Paul or Anakin, Aegon never conquered without a cause. According to recent lore, he saw a vision of an impending doom—a world of ice and the undead—and wanted to unite the realm against it. All of these figures did what they did because of the burden of prophecy. The Fremen of Arrakis believed Paul was their Lisan al Gaib, and the Jedi believed Anakin would bring balance to the Force. Ultimately, they all became lost in their respective prophecies, bringing ruin to themselves and the world around them.
The Inspirations for the World-Building
Martin did not pull the world of Westeros out of thin air; he took heavy inspiration from real-world history. For context, the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons is directly inspired by a 12th-century English succession war known as The Anarchy. Like King Viserys, King Henry I of England lost his male heir in a shipwreck and subsequently made his lords swear fealty to his daughter, Empress Matilda.
Similarly, the inspiration for Aegon the Conqueror stems from William the Conqueror. Like Aegon, William crossed the sea with a relatively small but highly specialized army, defeated the Anglo-Saxons, and united a fractured land under one ruler. Martin took bits and pieces from history, cranked up the volume, and added dragons and legendary swords with undeniably cool names.
The Targaryens and the Price of Purity
The Targaryens are known for more than their dragons; they harbored a notorious obsession with keeping their bloodline pure. To maintain this purity, they practiced incest for over 300 years.
The historical inspiration for this blood purity stems from the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt—the bloodline of Cleopatra, who traced her ancestry back to the Macedonians and Greeks. Believing their lineage to be divine, the Ptolemies emulated the Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris (who were brother and sister) to justify their incestuous marriages. In Westeros, this obsession meant successive generations of Targaryens were increasingly born with deformities, madness, and a propensity for brutal infighting.
The Curse of the White-Haired and Black-Haired Targaryens
Because they looked different from the smallfolk and nobility around them, the Targaryens appeared divine. Backed by the might of their dragons, they believed their power made them inherently superior to regular people. But this illusion became their undoing.
Once the last dragons died, there was no practical point to the incest, and the bloodline began to muddy. Even those with the classic “white hair”—who supposedly inherited the superior Valyrian genes—often took their privileges too far. This resulted in unfit rulers like Aegon IV (Aegon the Unworthy), a gluttonous king who sired numerous illegitimate children. On his deathbed, he legitimized them all, not out of love, but to spite his trueborn son, Daeron II, which plunged the realm into generations of war. Similarly, Aerys the Mad King grew violently paranoid in his final days, fearing his own son Rhaegar would usurp him.
On the other hand, the “black-haired” Targaryens—such as Rhaenyra’s sons with Ser Harwin Strong, or Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—faced their own unique struggles. For a family synonymous with platinum hair and violet eyes, lacking these features placed a massive burden on them. They constantly felt the need to prove themselves worthy of recognition and admiration, which often led to their early deaths.
Baelor wanted to stand for what was right despite being next in line for the throne, leading to his tragic death in a trial by combat. Likewise, a major catalyst for the Dance of the Dragons was the disputed parentage of Rhaenyra’s brown-haired children. This insecurity drove them to risky acts of valor, plunging headfirst into the frontlines of battle and putting their lives—and the future of the realm—at stake. The history of Westeros would have been entirely different had Baelor inherited the throne or if Jacaerys Velaryon had survived to wear the crown.
Martin’s Love for the Rogue Prince
George R.R. Martin has stated in numerous interviews that the Rogue Prince, Daemon Targaryen, is his favorite character. Martin has always gravitated toward morally gray figures. Quoting William Faulkner, Martin often says, “The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself.”
This conflict is evident in Daemon Targaryen more than anyone else. As a second son, he was the rider of the Blood Wyrm, Caraxes, and one of the finest swordsmen of his age—yet he could never truly be king. His magnetic allure constantly drew people to him; men, women, and even enemies were captivated by his charisma.
He manipulated, assassinated, and conquered, but above all, he was fiercely loyal. He could have usurped the throne and ended the Dance on his own terms, but he ultimately chose to support Rhaenyra’s claim. In a way, he symbolizes everything the Targaryens are known for: the magnificent and the monstrous.
Martin enjoyed writing about him so much that he penned a novella titled The Rogue Prince, published in 2014 as part of the multi-author fantasy anthology Rogues. Along with The Princess and the Queen, this story served as a foundational building block for the sprawling history of Fire & Blood.
In the end, it is characters like Daemon—and the messy, tragic legacy of the Targaryen dynasty—that prove exactly why Martin’s world has left such an indelible mark on our culture. He didn’t just give us fire-breathing monsters and ancient prophecies; he gave us flawed demigods who were ultimately undone not by a singular Dark Lord, but by their own pride, paranoia, and the crushing weight of their own myth. By planting his narrative seeds in the fertile ground of real history and letting them grow without the safety net of plot armor or absolute morality, Martin cultivated a fantasy universe that feels as unpredictable and dangerous as our own.
So, despite the HBO adaptations taking sharp deviations from the original source material, any lover of Game of Thrones knows that the era will inevitably end with the fall of the dragons. Ultimately, what brought the Targaryens down was not just politics or internal squabbles, but the suffocating weight of their own myth.
