The addition of a new category, Best Casting, to the Academy Awards was a milestone, as it marked the first addition in more than two decades. Not just that, a much-awaited category, Stunt Design, was announced last year for the 100th Academy Awards.
From starting off as an awards ceremony recognising masters across 12 categories, there have been numerous additions, restructurings, and discontinuations that have led to the evolution of the current 24 categories. Some lasted for just one year; some simply changed their names, while others were merged or discontinued.
