A protest is often judged by the size of its crowd, the faces involved or the force of its iconic speeches. But look closer, and you’ll find that protests speak in many more languages, today.
At the Cockroach Janta Party protest in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar resistance wasn’t confined to speeches or slogans. It was handwritten on placards, painted in bold colours, performed through costumes, carried in symbols, printed on t-shirts, sung in chorus, and sharpened through satire. Beyond the physical grounds, a parallel digital campaign redefined how a generation mobilizes.
Every creative choice became part of the message. Humour, sharp mockery, and courage found its place everywhere.
Slogans weren’t just catchy lines. It borrowed the rhythm of poetry, the bite of satire, and the precision of political writing. A placard wasn’t merely cardboard; it was troll at its peak, visual storytelling, and public art rolled into one. Internet memes, pop-culture references and witty one-liners stepped off the screens and into the streets. Ironic acts like cockroach cosplay and handing out Melody candies to police barricades made political messages more memorable.
And this creativity isn’t a distraction from the politics. It is the politics. Politics beyond political parties. Also, this isn’t a replacement, but evolution of traditional protest.
Protesters didn’t wait for mainstream media coverage. They were armed with their own handles and followers to speak up for justice in their own way. Even when faced with digital account blocks, new accounts emerged instantly.
People who couldn’t be physically present also had their own ways to take part. You see the online petitions to sign, hashtags to join and post content to spread the protest. The resistance got stronger when supporters across the country ordered food, water, and medical supplies directly to Jantar Mantar via delivery apps- an act of collective care.
Every placard, every meme, every performance, and every song add another sentence to the language of resistance.
