“Mera shaadi hain aaj, shaadi chhod ke aaya” (it’s my wedding, I’ve left it and come here)– this clip of a Messi fan expressing his disappointment after the ‘G.O.A.T India Tour 25’, went viral. He made the ultimate sacrifice, choosing to see his favourite footballer over his future bride. What makes someone pick their favourite footballer over their future wife? Is it love? Is it devotion, or something entirely different?

This kind of celebrity-fan dynamic can be broadly classified as a para-social relationship, ‘para’ because, unlike other social relationships, this is fundamentally a one-sided relationship. As these relationships grow, audiences can develop emotional investment and identification. There is nothing wrong with admiring a celebrity; admiration is natural, but when admiration turns into obsession, boundaries get blurred, and this seemingly innocent relationship turns into something dangerous. In many cases, celebrities or media houses actively foster this dynamic. The fans already love the celebrity, but the real challenge is to keep them invested.

One commonly used strategy is to make the celebrity seem relatable and available. A prime example of this is family vlog channels. From the moment they wake up to when they go to sleep, every single aspect of their life is documented. They make their audience a part of every major milestone in their life, be it childbirth, tantrums, or weddings ; the fans are a part of it. This gives the audience a false sense of inclusion. It is as if they, too, are a part of that family, so when something displeases the audience, they make it known very publicly, often blurring all boundaries. Concern turns into entitlement, affection into obsession and even obtrusion.

Another strategy is the monetisation of loyalty. The money you spend is directly proportional to the affection you have for your celebrity. It is a simple equation: the more you spend, the closer you get to your celebrity. In the Messi situation, fans spent a crazy amount of money on premium tickets, going up 10 lakh rupees for exclusive “meet and greet” packages, including photos and signed jerseys.

From a psychological point of view, this strengthens attachment through the ‘investment justification effect’: people value what they put effort or money into. The mismanagement of this situation turned this event— one that would have been a dream come true moment—into a nightmare, highlighting how emotional investment and financial expenditure are intertwined in para-social dynamics.

These instances— both family vlogs and celebrity meet and greets — show how media can foster intense, sometimes obsessive attachments. Para-social relationships can offer comfort and enjoyment, but when admiration crosses into obsession, the consequences include blurred boundaries, entitlement, and emotional distress, reminding us that even seemingly innocent admiration can have deeper psychological implications.
