Spider-Man: Brand New Day
An In-Depth Trailer Breakdown & Analysis
What We See in the Trailer
From the teasers that have been released so far, we are shown a completely different aspect of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. He is far removed from his usual cheerful self, which is understandable given everything that has happened to him since the last film.
He has lost Aunt May, who was his strongest emotional anchor, and no one actually remembers Peter Parker. He has been erased from everyone’s memory, including that of his girlfriend MJ and his best friend Ned. So, as far as the wider world is concerned, only Spider-Man exists, not Peter Parker.
In addition to all these existential woes, Peter may have to fight another inner battle: his mutation. There has been considerable speculation about why Peter is undergoing this metamorphosis, with the most popular fan theory pointing to a symbiote, better known as Venom.
In the last movie, Peter’s actions to fix the mess he created resulted in a multiverse-level incursion during the final act. Doctor Strange was ultimately able to prevent a total multiversal collapse, but it came at a terrible price. At the end of the film, the various visitors who came from different universes were sent back, including Eddie Brock, better known as Venom.
However, before he left, Eddie left behind a souvenir: a trace of his symbiote fragment. Technically, that symbiote could trigger the famous Venom transformation in Peter. Usually, when Peter is possessed by a symbiote, his powers are thrown into flux and his personality shifts drastically.
This time around, based on what we have seen in the trailer, from him zoning out to waking up inside cocoons of webbing, the change seems to be more internally driven than caused by external factors like a rogue symbiote.
Adding to all of this, a vast roster of new characters is being shown directly and indirectly in the trailer. This ranges from street-level villains like Scorpion, Tombstone and The Hand, the infamous ninja clan, to the Savage Hulk, the introduction of an Omega-level mutant to the MCU for the first time, and William Metzger, who may be the worst of all as the head of a mutant-hunting organization.
The Spider Metamorphosis
In classic Spider-Man comics and the vintage Spider-Man animated series from Fox, Peter, desperate for a normal life, sought to rid himself of his powers. He underwent a chemical treatment that initially suppressed his mutation, but as time passed, the mutation returned with full vigour.
The process aggressively accelerated his mutation, allowing his spider genes to completely take over. Peter developed two additional pairs of arms. What initially seemed manageable soon spiralled out of control. Ultimately, he managed to synthesize a cure using the blood of Morbius the Living Vampire.
Similarly, in another comic storyline, Spider-Man’s genetic power starts to go haywire, and day by day he becomes more spider and less human because of a degenerative cellular disease called the “Neogenic Nightmare.”
Even here, Peter grew an extra pair of limbs and became more arachnid by the day. He was slowly transformed into the “Man-Spider”, a massive, mindless, grey-furred beast featuring multiple red eyes, massive arachnid fangs, razor-sharp claws, the ability to spit corrosive acid, and the capacity to shoot organic webbing from all sides of his body. In the animated show, it took the combined efforts of The Punisher, Kraven the Hunter and others just to bring him down safely.
What the Mutation May Do to Peter
In the trailer, in addition to Peter’s powers going haywire, we see him finally develop organic webbing. This differentiates Tom Holland’s Spider-Man from previous live-action versions portrayed by Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield, both of whom traditionally relied on mechanical web-shooters. Conversely, the original Tobey Maguire Spider-Man never needed technology; he could shoot organic webbing directly from his wrists.
Furthermore, at the start of the trailer, we can see Peter catching Scorpion’s mechanical sting with his bare hand and throwing him around, a raw, brutal display of power that the old, restrained Peter would not have typically displayed. Likewise, there is a scene where his web-shooters are completely overpowered and broken, and he begins to see organic webbing physically secreting from his wrists.
One of the trailer’s standout moments is Peter’s confrontation with The Hand. A crowd of foot soldiers rushes at him with weapons drawn, and he not only evades them but ends up trapping the entire group in a massive cocoon of spider webbing with relative ease.
With characters such as Hulk and Jean Grey entering the fold, Peter is going to need all the physical power-ups he can get, especially now that there is no Tony Stark or active Avengers roster for him to reach out to for backup.
The X-Men Connection
Throughout the trailer, we can see instances where people are being mentally controlled by an outside force that is able to seamlessly hop from one mind to another. The peak moment in the footage occurs when the entire population of New York City is frozen in place after being hit with a massive psychic shockwave.
Both Spider-Man and The Punisher seem to be completely immune to this attack. Frank Castle’s resistance may stem from his singular focus and unwavering determination. His mind appears so thoroughly driven by his mission that even Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare has historically failed to affect him.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man appears to be protected by his Spider-Sense, the very same subconscious, autonomous reflex that prevented Doctor Strange from controlling his body when his astral form was separated in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
So while Peter’s genes may be mutating, the trailer suggests that one of the central figures could be Jean Grey, one of the most powerful telepaths in Marvel Comics history. In the comics, Jean Grey is an Omega-level mutant who can control minds, manipulate objects through telekinesis, and even serve as the ultimate host of the Phoenix Force, a universal manifestation of raw psychic energy.
Why You Should Watch the Latest Spider-Man on July 31
Yes, this marks the fourth standalone instalment of Spider-Man within the MCU. Traditionally, the live-action Spider-Man films have rarely disappointed fans, and the last MCU film that completely satisfied both hardcore fans and critics alike was Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Even if you set aside all the extended cinematic universe connections, the movie is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. He previously helmed acclaimed dramas such as Just Mercy, starring Michael B. Jordan, as well as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was widely praised for featuring some of the best action choreography in modern MCU history.
Action Grounded in Action Royalty
Best of all, the fights are choreographed by the legendary Jackie Chan and his stunt team, widely known as the Sing Ga Ban (The Jackie Chan Stunt Team). This elite crew has been with Chan since his early filmmaking days. What initially started as a small team of six stuntmen during the era of Project A grew into a legendary 20-member crew by the time they filmed Police Story 2.
Despite the team evolving over the decades, its members have continued to be recruited by major Hollywood directors for high-profile projects. Throughout the years, the crew has choreographed action benchmarks such as the Rush Hour series, The Tuxedo, and many others.
What makes this team so uniquely special is that, true to its heritage, its members move with a distinct physical rhythm. Because they train, eat and live together at specialised training bases, they choreograph combat using a musical concept of rhythm. Every punch, block, duck and hit is timed like a crisp musical beat, ensuring that the action in this film will be an absolute spectacle.
