Historic goals, landmark achievements, and memorable displays of sportsmanship have already added new chapters to the rich legacy of the FIFA World Cup.

Here are five standout moments from the opening days of FIFA 2026.

1.. THE FIRST GOAL

In the ninth minute of the opening match, Mexican forward Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The strike secured his place in World Cup history, adding his name to some of the most famous names in history.

The landmark goal, recorded as the 2,721st in the World Cup history, came during Mexico’s match against South Africa on June 11, 2026, at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. It was also one of the quickest opening-match goals in modern World Cup history.

2.. THE LIGHTNING STRIKE

Felix Nmecha, the 25-year-old German midfielder, set a new tournament benchmark by scoring the fastest goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far. Germany’s first goal of the tournament came in the sixth minute of their match against Curaçao on June 14, 2026.

Remarkably, it was also Nmecha’s World Cup debut. And the strike stands as one of Germany’s quickest goals in World Cup history.

3.. THE DEBUT GOAL

For Curaçao, one of the tournament debutants, it was a dream moment on football’s biggest stage. The nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal was scored by Livano Comenencia against Germany in the 21st minute at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Despite losing the match, Curaçao- the smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, gave its fans a moment that will live forever in the country’s sporting history, sparking celebrations.

4.. THE WORLD CUP RECORD

Upon defeating Curaçao 7–1 on June 14, 2026, Germany reportedly overtook Brazil as the highest-scoring nation in FIFA World Cup history. Germany’s tally reached 239 World Cup goals, surpassing Brazil’s previous record of 238.

5.THE HEARTWARMING MESSAGE

Memorable World Cup moments are not always created on the pitch; sometimes they come through powerful words. So was it when, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, captain of Team Melli (Islamic Republic of Iran), delivered a message of unity and peace on the eve of his nation’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Alireza spoke passionately about football’s ability to bring people together during difficult times.

“As individuals and as a team we would like to show that football unites the world and football unites people. It doesn’t matter the nation, the colour of the skin or the background – we are all human. Humans don’t have to suffer and hopefully we can give that impression to the world with football, with our feet and to show some personality on such a big stage.”, he said.

Competing in this tournament, Alireza also achieved the historic milestone of appearing in four separate FIFA World Cup editions.

Only four days have passed. There’s 35 more to go. As the tournament unfolds, so too will the number of memorable moments, records, and unforgettable battles on football’s biggest stage.
